For many yeras I have wanted to drive one designated highway from one end to the other. Not an Interstate, but one of the old federal highway system routes. US Highway 50 seemed like a good choice. Stretching across country it passes through Kansas City where I grew up. When we lived in Arlington and Fairfax, Virginia, Highway 50 passed nearby. We have been to the start of US 50 in Ocean City, Maryland.
When we received the assignment in Cortez, Co. I checked the altas for possible routes. It immediately was clear we could take US Highway 64 all the way west. We are probably 10 miles from US 64 in Hayesvill, North Carolina. We won't drive over to Nag's Head on the N.C. coast to pick up the start so we'll miss that portion. From Hayesville we can continue on US 64 to Shiprock, New Mexico where we turn north on US 491 to Cortez, Co. US 64 ends a few miles west of Shiprock at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona. We have been there on a previous visit.
Our retirement travel goals are to take our time, see and enjoy the country, and avoid the interstate as much as possible. US 64 sounds like a plan. I'll study the atlas and campground guides to find logical stops. From there the key is to remain flexible.
